Wolfhounds go top of Celtic Challenge with Clovers in close pursuit

Wolfhounds moved top of the Celtic Challenge league with a comprehensive 48-0 victory away to Brython Thunder in Llanelli on Saturday.

The Welsh hosts proved no match for Neill Alcorn's side, who led 31-0 at the break thanks to tries from Maebh Clenaghan, Molly Boyne, Amy Larn, Eve Higgins, and Aoife Dalton.

Katie Heffernan, captain Claire Boles, and Ella Roberts also crossed the whitewash as Wolfhounds scored eight tries for the second week running.

Ireland out-half Dannah O’Brien kicked four conversions and Stacey Flood added another.

Their rearranged home match against Brython takes place at the UCD Bowl next Saturday (1.30pm).

Elsewhere, Deirbhile Nic a Bháird led the way as Clovers beat erstwhile table-toppers Edinburgh in Cork on Saturday.

The Ireland back row was named player of the match and scored a superb individual try, one of three first-half scores by Denis Fogarty's side, who are second in the table behind Wolfhounds on points difference.

Sevens star Amee-Leigh Costigan and Beth Buttimer also crossed the line as the hosts took a 21-5 lead at the break.

Clovers skipper Enya Breen, Jemima Adams Verling, and replacement Chisom Ugwueru grabbed second-half tries with Nicole Fowley (4) and Caitríona Finn adding conversions.

The team are next in action in round five away to Glasgow Warriors on 25 January.
